March 2009

(Some of the book club members at a party in March – forgot my camera at book club this month.)

We had a wonderful meeting at Susan’s home.  The book was “The Shack,” written by Wm. Paul Young.  We had good discussions especially about forgiveness.  It wasn’t our favorite book, but as always the group finds a salient point and the discussion was well worth the read.

February’s book club next Friday

Well, “The Story of Edgar Sawtelle,” by David Wroblemski was terrific – long read and all.  (My review under pages section.)  For anyone interested, Oprah has a webcast with the author that’s about an hour long (go to her website and click under book club and scroll down till you find it).  The webcast lets you hear right from the author about all those questions you have about the book – I highly recommend it.  I can’t wait till book club.

January 2009 Book Club

Book club was small in the number of members, but large in comradery.  “Marley & Me,” was considered by all a fun book, well-written with some moments of insight.  (See *Marley & Me under Pages for more information.)

Last book for 2008

Our last book for 2008 was Sara Gruen’s “Water for Elephants,” at our November meeting.  I have highlighted what I believe are the salient points for book club discussions in my review under the Pages column.  Our December meeting is our holiday dinner, with no book required.

This post is just a thank you to the wonderful women associated with my book club.  Some of them don’t finish the book in time, some don’t read it at all, but we always manage to have a discussion on some aspect of the book.  It is the time with friends that matters most, and I feel so blessed to share my life with them.

A word about book clubs.

No one has anytime for anything anymore.  We have made ourselves just plain crazy.  So, here I come along and recommend yet another thing to make time for – join a book club or start your own book club.  It’s easy to do, just grab a few friends or coworkers or neighbors and pick a book.

Too busy to read, everyone is busy.  But there is something so pleasurable in coming together once a month and having a discussion about a book, even if you spend a good deal of time talking about other things.  Some books reflect the events that occur in our lives and we learn so much from how the characters deal or don’t from any particular event.  Other books allow us to glimpse into a world different from our own.  Some stories make us mad and some excite us, and it’s great to have people to share with.  We all have our own unique observations of a story and the discussions enable us to see the story from another perspective.  I always come away from book club feeling more informed, stimulated and way less stressed, even if I was finishing the novel on the way to book club.

New book reviews will be added to the site weekly.  Some reviews are from our monthly book club meetings (and will be duly noted), and some are books I have read.  I am also including reviews of short stories.  Sometimes the book club as a whole is just too busy to read a novel so we read short stories, which is great because none of us would probably read a short story otherwise.

Reading almost always delivers – enjoy!
