*When You Lie About Your Age, The Terrorists Win

bc when you lie about your age

The author, Carol Leifer, is a stand-up comedian, an Emmy-nominated writer and producer for Seinfield, The Larry Sanders Show and Saturday Night Live. She has also created and starred in the sitcom “Alright Already.” The author has great credentials, but the book fell short.
On Amazon there is a video of the author doing a little shtick and it is funny. Leifer’s observations are not the problem, they are funny and right-on, but the written word doesn’t show body language and timing needed to drive the punch lines into orbit.
Leifer is at her funniest with your reflections on being Jewish. “Jews have the lowest incidence of suicide among all religions…in our deepest, darkest moments there’s this small voice…”Oh, look! Cake!”
The chapter on her being converted into an animal lover was cute with one very good punch line about Grey Goose (don’t want to spoil it). There’s also a chapter on bumper stickers she calls “opinion pods.” These are good observations with witty insights into our crazy world.
Leifer turns slightly serious with her chapter on Feminism titled, “Fighting for Your Fake Tits.” The author is dead-on regarding working on Feminism, but it is a funny chapter and probably one of the best chapters. Another good chapter is on the holiday gift giving and keeping tract of what you receive. Leifer shares her childhood memories of getting the generic version of everything.

Book clubs can certainly find some of her observations good fodder for discussions and some people may really enjoy the book. For me the material was creative and entertaining, but just not for me.
