*Where They Found Her

where they found herOur April pick for book club was a fast-paced mystery.  A whodunnit in every sense of the word.

The protagonist, Molly Anderson, draws you in immediately.  She is a working mother trying to overcome the death of her second child.  Her husband, Justin, is an amazing father who helped keep the family together during Molly’s dark depression. They have just moved to Ridgedale, New Jersey to start fresh in a new town with new jobs.

Molly is the only reporter at the local paper when a body of a newborn baby girl is found dead by a stream on a college campus. Her husband doesn’t want her to get involved fearing it will propel her backwards in her recovery.  Molly, however, is determined to discover the truth of what happened to the baby.

McCreight introduces some interesting characters. Bitchy Barbara, the chief of police’s wife is so detestable, while 16-year-old, Sandy, is so admirable for trying to function like an adult and take care of her mother.

Molly tries to figure out if the infant’s death was a terrible accident or a homicide, as a lot of different characters weave their way through the story.   She tells her backstory through therapist recordings and by a journal she kept at the time.

The final twist I didn’t see coming and I love that.  I felt something was off, but couldn’t put my finger on it.

My book club loved the book.  We talked about secrets from the past that are kept hidden and feelings never explored. There was plenty of discussion about marriage and motherhood also.

If you like a fast read and a thrilling one – this is it.
