A Good and Happy Child by Justin Evans

“A Good and Happy Child,” is a fast-paced thriller about a man trying to understand why he can’t hold his own son, which at first doesn’t sound like much of a thriller.  However, as the book unfolds it travels a fine line between insanity and the supernatural.  The father, George Davies, seeks the help of a psychiatrist in Manhattan to help him cure his anxiety over his newborn son.  George and his wife had agreed to separate until he could work out his problem.

George’s story is told through his sessions with the psychiatrist.  George doesn’t want to go back to his childhood, but eventually the conversations all lead back in time and this is where we begin to see his demons or is it psychotic breaks in reality.  Is he insane or is he possessed?

When George was 11 his father’s colleagues believe he was possessed just like his father had been, but his mother believed differently and put George in therapy to try to help him.  A dance begins between his mother and his father’s colleagues who both want to help George with his visions, but in very different ways.

This book is weird, but yet very scary.  The mind is a very scary place if it’s not wired right.  Demons or insanity are they the same thing?  This is not a good book for book club, but if you enjoy thrillers you may enjoy this it certainly leaves you hanging – have fun.
